YouTube Ads: How to Advertise on YouTube, Step by Step

Formats, how Google charges you, how much reach your budget buys and the test campaign we would run, based on Google's own help pages and what three AIs answer.

YouTube ads are created in Google Ads: you upload your video to YouTube, set up a Video campaign and pay per view or per thousand impressions, depending on the format you choose. With a small, fixed budget you can find out in two weeks whether your ad works, and that's exactly what we'll set up.

If you landed here sick of watching them, the way to remove them is in the FAQ at the end. This guide is for the other side: running them. In the US, "youtube ads" gets about 14,800 searches a month and "how much does it cost to advertise on youtube", 880 (DataForSEO, October 2026).

We read Google's official help pages, compared what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer and designed a test campaign that doesn't burn cash. It's online advertising at its most measurable.

What are YouTube ads and how does YouTube advertising work?

They're videos your business pays to show before, during or next to other YouTube videos, managed from Google Ads.

YouTube ads are promoted videos bought in Google Ads through an auction. They show before or during other videos, on the home feed, in search results and in Shorts, and you pay per view, per click or per thousand impressions depending on the format and your bid strategy.

What they aren't: paying a YouTuber to talk about you. That's a sponsorship, negotiated with the creator. YouTube video ads are sold by Google and show wherever the auction places them, within the limits you set. It's not channel monetization either: that's when you get paid.

YouTube ad formats and how you pay for each

There are six formats, and each one charges differently: per view, per click or per thousand impressions.

FormatWhere it showsLengthHow you pay
Skippable in-streamBefore, during or after other videosNo max (under 3 min recommended); skip after 5 sPer view, or per impression with target CPM
Non-skippable in-streamBefore or during other videosUp to 60 s, no skipPer thousand impressions
BumperBefore, during or after other videos5 to 6 s, no skipPer thousand impressions
In-feedSearch, home feed and Watch NextNo maxWhen someone clicks to watch
ShortsIn the Shorts feed, verticalUnder 60 s recommendedPer view at 10 s, click or engagement, or per impression
MastheadTop of the YouTube home feedOver 10 s recommendedReservation only

These details come from Google Ads Help on video ad formats, checked in October 2026. For file types, resolutions and aspect ratios, see the specs answer in the FAQ below.

When does YouTube charge you for a view?

With skippable ads on CPV bidding, only when someone watches 30 seconds, the whole ad if it's shorter, or clicks. Skip at 5 seconds and you pay nothing. So the hook isn't about keeping everyone: it's about keeping the right people and letting everyone else leave for free.

How long should a YouTube ad be?

Six seconds for a bumper, 15 to 30 for a skippable ad and under 60 for Shorts. Google allows longer skippable ads, but it recommends staying under three minutes, and most small businesses get more from a tight 20 seconds than from a mini documentary.

How much does it cost to advertise on YouTube?

There's no rate card: you pay whatever the auction sets, with a cap you control. What you can calculate is how much reach your budget buys.

Google doesn't publish average YouTube ads cost by country, and the AIs don't agree either. In our test, ChatGPT put a US view at $0.05 to $0.30, Perplexity at $0.02 to $0.10 and Gemini at $0.03 to $0.15. Treat those as ballpark figures, never as prices.

The math that matters: impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000. With $200 and a $10 CPM (an example, not a quote) you get 20,000 impressions. If your bumper hits that with a frequency of 3, you've reached about 6,700 people. Run your own numbers in our CPM calculator before you spend a dollar.

What budget do you need to start?

One you can lose without drama that lasts at least two weeks. Perplexity and Gemini suggested $10 to $20 a day. We prefer a campaign total budget, say $250 for 14 days: Google Ads lets you choose between total and daily, and a total cap means no surprises.

How to advertise on YouTube, step by step

You do it in Google Ads in seven steps: upload, link, new campaign, subtype, budget, targeting and the ad itself.

  1. Upload the video to your YouTube channel

Public or unlisted works; private doesn't. Unlisted is the practical choice: it works for the ad and keeps your channel clean.

  2. Link your channel to Google Ads

This is the Google Ads YouTube connection: Tools, Linked accounts, YouTube. You'll see video metrics and can build audiences from people who already watched.

  3. Create a new campaign

Go to Campaigns, click the plus icon, then New campaign. Pick the YouTube reach, views and engagements objective, or create a campaign without a goal's guidance if you want full control.

  4. Choose Video and a subtype

For a first test, Video views. If you're going for bumpers and reach, Video reach with the efficient reach option.

  5. Set your budget and bid

A campaign total budget with dates, or a daily one. Bid with CPV on video views and CPM on reach.

  6. Target one idea

Location, language and one audience: interests, topics or keywords tied to your product. Stacking filters leaves a tiny audience and tends to raise the cost of each impression.

  7. Build the ad and publish

Paste the video URL, add your final URL, headline and call to action. Google reviews the ad before it starts showing.

How to promote a YouTube video with ads

You can promote a YouTube video two ways: the Promote button in YouTube Studio, which is fastest, or a Google Ads campaign, which gives you the most control. Both run on Google's ad system.

In Studio, open Content and go to the Promotions tab, or click Promote on the video's watch page. You pick a goal (more subscribers, more engagement, more visibility or more clicks to your site), an audience by location, language and interests, and a budget. It works for Shorts too.

According to YouTube's help page, advanced targeting and deeper analytics mean moving to Google Ads. Start in Studio and switch once the video proves itself.

One catch if you plan to monetize: subscribers and watch hours you gain through ads don't count toward the YouTube Partner Program. Only organic ones do.

Take a bike repair shop in Denver with a two-minute video and $100 to spend. If a view cost $0.05 (an assumption, not a price), you'd get about 2,000 views. The number that matters is how many of them turn into a phone call or a visit.

YouTube Demand Gen campaigns: what they are and when to use them

Demand Gen is the Google Ads campaign type that spreads your video and image ads across YouTube, Discover, Gmail and the Google Display Network, and optimizes for actions like clicks, leads or sales. It replaces the old video action campaigns. Per Google Ads Help, you could no longer create them after April 2025, and the last batch of upgrades was scheduled for April 2026. If an older tutorial walks you through one, it's out of date.

Regular Video campaigns, for views and for reach, still exist. Pick like this:

You wantCampaign
People to remember you with bumpersVideo, reach
Views on one videoVideo, views
Leads or sales, with conversion tracking set upDemand Gen

Two things before you jump. If you bid on target CPA, Google Ads recommends a budget of at least 10 times your target CPA: with a $25 target CPA, that's $250, the full amount of our test. Google also says mixing video and image assets typically performs better than video alone.

Our advice: run your first campaign for views, then move to Demand Gen once you're measuring conversions.

How to make 6-second bumper ads people remember

A bumper works when it says one thing, shows the brand at the start and the end, and reaches the same person several times.

SecondWhat goes in
0 to 1Brand or product on screen, no intro
1 to 4One idea: the benefit or the offer
4 to 6Brand again and what to do ("Book online")

Here's an example for a dental office in Phoenix: second 0, the logo on the front door; seconds 1 to 4, "Same-day cleanings, open Saturdays"; seconds 5 and 6, logo and "Book online today." Twelve spoken words, tops.

Voice matters more than music. If you don't have a voice actor, a good AI voice generator costs little and sounds professional. And add big captions: plenty of people watch YouTube on their phones with the sound down.

Copy-paste prompts

Write 3 scripts for a 6-second YouTube bumper ad for [your business] in [city]. Split each script into three parts: 0-1 s (brand), 1-4 s (one idea: [benefit or offer]) and 4-6 s (brand plus call to action: [action]). Maximum 12 spoken words per script, plus a visual note for each part.

YouTube ads vs. Amazon Ads vs. native advertising

YouTube wins at getting you known and remembered; when people are already shopping, other channels convert faster.

ChannelThe person is...You pay perUse it to
YouTube adsWatching videosView or thousand impressionsGet known and remembered
Amazon AdsSearching for a product to buyClickSell a product already on Amazon
Native adsReading a publicationClick or thousand impressionsExplain an idea in depth

If you sell on Amazon, see how Amazon Ads work, and if your product needs explaining, browse these native advertising examples. Learning how to run YouTube ads without a landing page that converts just means paying for visits that leave.

Frequently asked questions about YouTube ads

Can you buy ads on YouTube?

Yes. Any business can buy YouTube ads through Google Ads: you create a Video campaign, pick a video from your channel and set a budget. There's no sales rep or minimum contract for self-serve campaigns, and you pay through the auction, per view or per thousand impressions. The only format you can't just switch on is the Masthead at the top of the YouTube home feed, which is sold by reservation.

How do you get ads off YouTube?

The only official way is YouTube Premium, the paid subscription that removes ads from videos. In your Google account settings you can turn off personalized ads, but you'll still see ads. Ad blockers exist, and YouTube keeps cracking down on them. If you're an advertiser, flip it around: Premium members won't see your video ad, so the only way to reach them is a sponsorship with a creator.

How to advertise on YouTube for free?

You can't run YouTube ads for free, but you can promote your channel without paying. Post Shorts that point to your long videos, reply to comments in the first few days, collaborate with channels your size and link your videos from your website, Google Business Profile and social accounts. Write titles around real searches. Paid ads speed things up, but they don't fix a weak video: if it doesn't hold attention for free, it won't when you pay.

What are the YouTube ad specs?

Upload horizontal video at 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9), vertical at 1080 x 1920 (9:16) for Shorts, or square at 1080 x 1080. Google accepts HD down to 1280 x 720 horizontal, files up to 256 GB and formats like MP4 and MOV, though it lists MPEG as its recommended file type. Audio-only files are rejected. For length, aim for 15 seconds on skippable in-stream and in-feed ads, 6 seconds for bumpers and 6 to 60 seconds for Shorts, per Google Ads Help.

Are YouTube ads worth it?

They're worth it when your product sells better once people see it in action and you can track what happens after the click. For awareness, judge them by the cost of reaching a thousand people; for direct sales, they work best with conversion tracking and a landing page built for the ad. Run a two-week test with a fixed total budget and judge it by cost per lead or sale, not by views.

What are bumper ads?

Bumper ads are non-skippable YouTube video ads of up to 6 seconds, and you pay for them per thousand impressions. They play before, during or after other videos. Use them to make people remember your name, not to explain your product: one idea, your brand at the start and the end, and enough frequency for the same person to see it a few times. They work best alongside a longer skippable ad that tells the full story.

How do YouTube Shorts ads work?

Shorts ads play between videos in the Shorts feed, full screen and vertical, and viewers can swipe past them right away. If you bid per view, Google charges you after 10 seconds of watching, a click on the call to action or an engagement like a like or a share; with target CPM, you pay per impression. Shoot in 9:16 from the start and get to the point in the first second: a cropped horizontal ad looks out of place.
