Best time to post on Instagram in 2027, day by day (and how to find yours)

Five 2026 studies give five different answers, and that's fine: here's the table to start with tomorrow and the test that tells you your real time.

The best time to post on Instagram is right before your followers open the app, and only your own Insights can tell you when that is. Need a starting point in the US? The windows that keep showing up in 2026 studies are midweek afternoons, especially Wednesday from noon on, and weekday evenings around 7 p.m. local time.

We compared the five most-cited studies and asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same question. Every study lands on a different time: anywhere from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Here's the day-by-day table and a four-week test to find your own time with data, not vibes. If you're building your social media game plan, this is the cheapest fix you'll make this month.

When is the best time to post on Instagram, according to 5 studies

There's no single best time: five 2026 studies with millions of posts give five answers, though four of them favor weekday afternoons or evenings.

The best time to post on Instagram is the window when a big share of your followers is online and reacting to what you share. You measure it with your own analytics, it shifts by day, format and your audience's time zone, and it's worth checking again every month.

What it isn't: the hour when the most people are on Instagram overall, since that's also when competition peaks. And it's not a hack that rescues a weak post.

StudySampleIts best time
Sprout Social (March 2026)Nearly 2 billion engagements across 307,000 profilesTuesday and Wednesday; Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m.
Buffer (September 2026)9.6 million postsThursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon and 6 p.m.
Later (April 2026, 2024 data)6 million posts5 a.m., almost every day
Hootsuite (July 2026)1 million posts from 118 countriesEarly morning and early evening
Metricool (June 2026)24.4 million posts7 to 9 p.m., with 8 p.m. most days

They disagree because they measure different things, over different periods. What Sprout Social, Buffer, Later and Hootsuite share is local time: their 7 p.m. is 7 p.m. wherever your audience lives. Metricool doesn't say. Buffer's study of 9.6 million posts is the most transparent about how it calculates engagement.

Best day and time to post on Instagram, day by day

No data of your own yet? Start with this table, which crosses two US-based studies, Sprout Social and Buffer.

If you just want the best time of day to post on Instagram, look at the last column. It's our pick for your first week, where the two studies overlap: a hypothesis you're about to test, not gospel.

What's the best time to post on Instagram on Monday?

Afternoon or evening: Sprout Social says 2 to 4 p.m., and Buffer puts 7 p.m. on top. Skip early Monday mornings.

What's the best time to post on Instagram on Sunday?

Evening, around 8 to 9 p.m., per Buffer. Sprout Social calls Sunday one of the worst days, but Metricool found Sunday Reels pull the highest average views of the week: 22,096 per video. If you post video, Sunday night deserves a test.

What's the best time to post on Instagram today?

Find today's row in the table and post at the start of that window. Already missed it? Don't rush a post out: schedule it for the next good slot.

Best time to post on Instagram on Friday and Saturday

Friday and Saturday are where the studies disagree most, so your audience's habits count here more than anywhere else. “Best time to post on Instagram Friday” gets about 9,900 searches a month in the US and “Saturday” about 8,100 (DataForSEO, October 2026).

Sprout SocialBufferMetricool
FridayNo clear peak; skip 3 to 7 a.m.10 p.m. (or 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.)8 p.m.
SaturdayWeakest day of the week9 p.m. (or 10 and 8 p.m.)8 p.m. (and 7 p.m.)

What's the best time to post on Instagram on Friday?

At night: 10 p.m. per Buffer and 8 p.m. per Metricool, so test 8 to 10 p.m. Sprout Social finds no significant peak on Fridays and only says to avoid the early morning, so treat any Friday slot as a test, not a rule.

What's the best time to post on Instagram on Saturday?

Evening again, 8 to 9 p.m., where Buffer and Metricool agree. But Sprout Social ranks Saturday as the lowest-engagement day of the week, so make it an experiment rather than your anchor day.

In Sprout Social's industry breakdown (2026), weekends are the worst days in eight of the nine industries it lists. The exception is education, where Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. is among the best slots. If your Most active times show tall bars on Friday night, test that slot against a Thursday at noon for four weeks, with the same format in both.

How to see Instagram Insights and find your best time

Your real best time lives in Instagram Insights, under Most active times, as long as you have a professional account and at least 100 followers.

  1. Switch to a professional account

In your settings, go to Account type and tools and switch to a professional account, either creator or business.

  2. Open your Professional dashboard

It sits right under your bio.

  3. Tap Total followers

No activity data? Check your follower count. Meta's developer documentation says this data isn't available under 100 followers and only covers the last 30 days.

  4. Scroll down to Most active times

Switch between Hours, which shows activity hour by hour for each day, and Days. Tap each day separately: your Monday and your Saturday won't look alike.

  5. Write down your top two slots and where followers live

Note the two highest hours for each day and check the top cities and countries on the same screen.

  6. Schedule a little before the peak

Post 30 to 60 minutes before your highest bar, which is what most social media tools recommend. Your post is already there when people show up.

  7. Check again every month

The data covers 30 days, so look again monthly and after big changes, like summer break or a launch.

Instagram algorithm: does posting time matter?

It matters, but it's not first in line: Instagram admits it looks at when a post was shared, but your audience's own activity carries more weight.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, laid it out in Instagram Ranking Explained on May 31, 2023. There's no single Instagram algorithm: Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels each have their own. In Feed, the time a post went up sits in the "information about the post" group, next to how popular it is. That group ranks second, behind what each user does on the app.

Timing helps your followers see the post when they open the app and react early. For Reels, the things Instagram says it predicts most are whether you'll share it, watch it to the end, like it or tap its audio. Posting time fixes none of those.

You'll find videos claiming Mosseri said timing doesn't matter. We couldn't track down the original, so we're not treating it as official.

Best time to post Reels on Instagram, Stories and photos

Each format has its own clock: Reels do best in the evening and late at night, and Stories around lunch, according to Metricool's 2026 study.

FormatBest windowSource
Reels6 to 9 p.m. for engagement; midnight for average viewsMetricool, 2026
Stories11 a.m. to 2 p.m., every dayMetricool, 2026
Photos and carouselsThe day-by-day table aboveSprout Social and Buffer, 2026

Reels don't live or die in the first hour: Metricool found about 30% of their views come on day one and 70% within the first three days. Timing decides the launch, not the whole race.

As for the best time to post Instagram Stories: they last 24 hours and, per Instagram, are ranked mostly by your relationship with each follower. Spread them out while your followers are online.

Best time to post on Instagram EST, CST and PST

Post on your audience's clock, not yours: the studies use local time, so a 7 p.m. slot means 7 p.m. where most of your followers live.

With a national audience, check your top cities in Insights and schedule for the zone of your biggest, or best-paying, group.

Eastern (ET)Central (CT)Mountain (MT)Pacific (PT)
9 a.m.8 a.m.7 a.m.6 a.m.
Noon11 a.m.10 a.m.9 a.m.
3 p.m.2 p.m.1 p.m.Noon
7 p.m.6 p.m.5 p.m.4 p.m.

Followers split between coasts? Look for a slot that lands inside the window on both. On Wednesday (Sprout Social: noon to 9 p.m.), 3 p.m. ET is noon PT, so both coasts are covered. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026; most of Arizona and all of Hawaii don't change clocks, so their gap with the rest of the country shifts.

Instagram posting schedule: a sample week with times

Most people don't want a single hour, they want a weekly plan. “Instagram posting schedule” gets about 6,600 searches a month in the US and around 1,000 questions in AI chats (DataForSEO, September 2026, estimate).

Start with how many posts. Buffer's study of about 2.1 million feed posts from roughly 102,000 accounts (August 2025) found that 3 to 5 posts a week is the sweet spot. Its model put follower growth at +0.12% with 1 to 2 posts a week, +0.26% with 3 to 5 and +0.66% with 10 or more. Reach per post was about 12% higher at 3 to 5 than at 1 to 2. More posts still help, with diminishing returns, and Buffer says quality comes first.

Here's a four-post week built from the times above. The formats are our suggestion.

DayPostTime to testWhy

WednesdayCarouselNoonThe day the studies agree on most
ThursdayPhoto9 a.m.Buffer's top slot of the week
SundayReel8 to 9 p.m.Metricool: Sunday Reels pull the highest average views

Add Stories at lunch, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., per Metricool. When you run the four-week test below, keep one format per slot so only the time changes. After it, swap each time for your own Most active times. Three posts a week is a fine floor; go to five only if quality holds.

How to test your posting time with an Instagram engagement rate calculator

Pick two time slots, post the same format in both for four weeks and compare each post's engagement at the 72-hour mark.

Change only the time, post at least four times per slot and use the median, not the average, so one viral post doesn't fool you.

Here's a made-up example with realistic numbers: a coffee shop in Austin with 4,800 followers tests two slots with Reels.

Tue and Thu at 11:30 a.m. CTTue and Thu at 7 p.m. CT
Reels posted44
Median reach at 72 hours3,1004,400
Median interactions154226
Engagement rate by followers3.2%4.7%

Evenings win. If the gap were a few tenths of a point, you'd keep testing. Run the math on each post with our engagement rate calculator: plug in followers, likes, comments and shares and get the percentage.

Act as a social media analyst. Here are my Instagram posts from the last 4 weeks with day, time, format, reach at 72 hours and interactions: [paste your data here]. I have [number] followers. Group the posts by time slot, calculate the median for each slot and tell me which one wins and whether I need more data before I switch.

Frequently asked questions about the best time to post on Instagram

What is the 4-1-1 rule on Instagram?

It's a content-mix ratio, not an Instagram rule: for every six posts, four give value (they teach, entertain or share something useful from others), one is a softer post about you and one is a direct sales pitch. It's usually credited to Andrew Davis of Tippingpoint Labs and Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute. On Instagram, read it as a cap on self-promotion: if every other post says buy, you're selling too hard.

What is the worst time to post on Instagram?

Roughly 2 to 5 a.m. is the dead zone in Metricool's 2026 study, and Sprout Social says to skip Fridays from 3 to 7 a.m. The catch: Later found above-average engagement from 3 to 6 a.m. in its 2024 data, because there's less competition and your post is waiting when people wake up. By day, Sprout Social ranks Saturday last, and Buffer flags Friday and Saturday as the weakest.

What's the best time to post on Instagram for likes?

Buffer's data is the closest match, because its engagement rate counts likes, comments, shares and saves per follower. Across 9.6 million posts from January 2024 to December 2025, its top slots were Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at noon and 6 p.m. Likes alone are a thin signal, though: Instagram says it watches whether people spend time on a post, comment, like, share and tap your profile, so track shares and saves too.

Is it good to post at midnight on Instagram?

Sometimes, mostly for Reels. In Metricool's 2026 data, Reels posted at midnight averaged 25,159 views, 58% more than the 15,928 of Reels posted at 6 p.m., the busiest hour for uploads. For engagement rate, evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. still win, and Buffer's best Friday slot is 10 p.m. Late posts face less competition. Test one late slot against an evening slot for four weeks, with the same format in both.

What is the 5-3-2 rule on Instagram?

It's a content-mix guideline for every 10 posts: five curated from other sources, three you create yourself and two personal posts that show the people behind the brand. It isn't an official Instagram rule, and there's no solid record of who came up with it. On Instagram, curating usually means reposts, Stories or collabs, so treat the five as content that isn't about you.

What is the 3 second rule on Instagram?

It's creator shorthand, not an official rule: you get about three seconds at the start of a Reel to give people a reason to keep watching. Instagram doesn't publish a three-second cutoff, but it does say that one of the things it predicts most for Reels is whether you'll watch all the way through. So open with the result, the question or the movement, and save the logo for the end.

How do I schedule Instagram posts?

Right in the app, if you have a professional account: create the post or Reel, open Advanced settings, tap Schedule and pick a date and time. Per Instagram's Help Center, you can schedule up to 75 days ahead and up to 25 posts a day, and manage them from Scheduled content on your profile. Product tags, collabs and cross-posting to Facebook don't work with scheduled posts yet. That's how to schedule Instagram posts natively; Meta Business Suite works too.
