How to get more followers on Instagram without buying them: a 30-day plan
Checked against Instagram's blog, Help Center and Meta's Transparency Center: what Instagram rewards, what it penalizes and how to put it to work week by week.
How to get more followers on Instagram without buying them comes down to three levers Instagram has confirmed in writing: original Reels people share, a profile that shows up in search and Collab posts with accounts like yours. Everything else is noise or breaks the rules.
We read what Instagram and Meta publish and asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the same question. None of them cited an official Instagram source, and Google's AI answer cited two documents promoting "free followers" sites.
Here's the 30-day plan and how to tell if your growth is healthy. If you're building your social media strategy, start here.

How to get real followers on Instagram (and what counts as real)
Real followers follow you because they care about your content, and they show up in your insights: they watch, react, save and share.
Real Instagram followers are accounts of people or businesses that choose to follow you for your content and engage with it. They find you through recommendations, search, collaborations or word of mouth, and their value shows up in reach, interactions, messages and sales, not just in the number on your profile.
What a real follower isn't: a bought account, a bot, someone who follows you for a follow-back and leaves a week later, or someone who entered a giveaway just for the prize. They pad the count and drag down everything else.
Instagram algorithm 2026: what Instagram itself says about recommendations
There's no single Instagram algorithm. There are several, and to show you to non-followers they lean mostly on watch time, likes and sends.
| Date | Source | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| May 31, 2023 | Instagram blog (Mosseri) | For Reels, it predicts whether you'll reshare, watch to the end, like or tap through to the audio |
| January 2025 | Mosseri video, via Social Media Today | The top three signals: watch time, likes and sends |
| Feb 26, 2025 | Instagram blog for creators | A Reel goes to a small group of non-followers first and expands based on how they respond; Reels are shared over 4.5 billion times a day |
| December 2025 | @creators account on Threads | Up to 5 hashtags per post |
In April 2024, Instagram also announced that original content would replace reposts in recommendations. Reposting other people's videos won't grow you.
If a post breaks Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines, your followers still see it, but Instagram won't recommend it to anyone else. Account Status (Profile, Menu, under "More info and support") tells you whether you can be recommended. And Meta's Transparency Center says the suggested accounts system predicts how likely you are to follow an account and looks at mutual connections. That's why Collab posts work so well.
What we couldn't find in any official source: the "5-3-1 rule" or proof that replying fast boosts reach. Timing matters less than content; if you want it anyway, here's the best time to post on Instagram.
How to get more followers on Instagram in 30 days: the plan
Four weeks: fix your profile in week one, post and collaborate in weeks two and three, then measure and double down in week four.
-
Switch to a professional account and check Account Status
Days 1 and 2. You get insights and access to trial Reels. On the web, under Edit profile, keep "Show account suggestions on profiles" on: if you turn it off, you won't appear as a suggestion on other profiles either.
-
Put your keyword in your name and bio
Days 2 and 3. More in the next section.
-
Pin three posts that sell your account
Day 4. Here's how to pin a post on Instagram: open it, tap the three dots and choose "Pin to main grid." You can pin up to three. Pick one that says who you are, one with your best result and your most-saved post.
-
Post three original Reels a week
Weeks 2 to 4. Your own footage, no watermarks from other apps, with the hook in the first second. End with one ask: save it, send it to someone or follow for part two.
-
Test new ideas with trial Reels
Weeks 2 to 4. Instagram trial reels go to non-followers first: flip the "Trial" toggle before sharing and you get stats within 24 hours. If it works, share it with everyone.
-
Land two Collab posts with accounts like yours
Week 3. Here's how to collab on Instagram: tap "Tag people," then "Invite collaborators," and add up to five accounts. The post shows on each profile and to each audience. Think a bakery in Austin and the coffee shop on its block.
-
Measure on Sunday and repeat what works
Week 4. Note which Reels brought the most followers and make two more versions of each.
How often should you post on Instagram to grow?
Three to five times a week is a solid start. Buffer analyzed 2.1 million posts from 102,000 accounts (August 2025): going from one or two weekly posts to three to five raised the lift in follower growth rate from +0.12% to +0.26%. It's a correlation with diminishing returns, so pick a pace you can keep.
How many hashtags on Instagram should you use?
Five at most, per Instagram's Help Center. Choose specific tags for your topic and city: they tell Instagram what a post is about more than they add reach.
Instagram SEO: how to get followers on Instagram through search
Instagram search matches what people type against names, bios, captions, hashtags and places, so your keyword has to live there.
Mosseri explained it in how Instagram Search works on August 25, 2021: the text people type is "by far the most important signal" for results. He recommends keywords and location in your bio and hashtags in the caption, not the comments. Bonus: if your account is professional, public and run by an adult, your public posts can show up on Google, according to the Help Center.
| Field | What to put | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Brand, what you do, where | Luna Bakery, Austin sourdough |
| Bio | What you offer, for whom, the action you want | Sourdough baked daily on South Congress. Order by DM |
| Caption | Keyword in the first line | Fresh sourdough out of the oven |
| Hashtags | Up to 5, specific | #austinbakery |
Think about what a stranger types into search: "Austin bakery," not "Luna Bakery." That's how to get followers on Instagram while you sleep.
What should your Instagram bio say?
What you do and for whom, one proof point and the action you want, with a link. Your slogan fits: classic slogan examples run about 4 words. Skip generic Instagram bio ideas lists and write in plain letters. Instagram fonts look cute, but there's a catch.
We checked: in "𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘆," the "B" is Unicode character U+1D5D5, a math symbol. A literal search for "bakery" doesn't match it, we don't know whether Instagram search converts it, and screen readers spell it out or skip it. Use fancy letters for one word, never your keyword.
Instagram highlights: which ones to create to get more followers
Instagram highlights are your profile's shop window: they stay pinned under your bio until you remove them, while regular Stories vanish after 24 hours.
Picture someone landing on your profile from a Reel. They don't know you, so they scan your bio and look for proof within seconds. Four or five highlights, ordered from most to least convincing, answer them before they leave. On a phone, only the first few show without swiping.
Let's say Luna Bakery in Austin sets up its profile like this:
| Highlight | What to put in | Doubt it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Meet us | Faces, the oven and the story | Can I trust them? |
| What we bake | Breads with ballpark prices | What do they sell, and for how much? |
| Reviews | Customer messages, with permission | Does anyone recommend them? |
| How to order | Steps to order by DM | How do I get it? |
| FAQ | Allergens, hours and delivery | What if something goes wrong? |
Use one-word names and covers in one color with an icon, so they read inside the circle. Review them monthly and delete anything expired, like old hours or prices. To fill them, don't shoot anything extra: save the everyday Stories you already post.
Can you buy followers on Instagram? Why it backfires
You can, but it breaks Meta's rules, Instagram removes fake activity and your engagement per follower collapses: you pay to make your numbers worse.
Meta's spam policy, which covers Instagram, bans "selling, buying, or exchanging for engagement," and it names follows explicitly. In the US there's a second problem. Since October 21, 2024, an FTC rule bans buying or selling fake indicators of social media influence, like bot followers. It applies when the buyer knew or should have known they're fake and uses them to look more influential for a commercial purpose.
| Before buying | After buying 8,000 | |
|---|---|---|
| Followers | 2,000 | 10,000 |
| Average interactions per post | 100 | 100 |
| Engagement rate by followers | 5% | 1% |
Fake followers don't watch, comment or buy. Mosseri tells creators to watch likes and sends per reach, and those drop when part of your audience never reacts.
Does Instagram remove fake followers?
Yes. Since November 19, 2018, Instagram has used machine learning to remove inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use growth apps, and it notifies those accounts in the app. A bought package can vanish from your count.
Instagram follow for follow and free followers: what works
You can get free followers on Instagram, but not from a follow-for-follow swap or a "free followers" app. What's free is your time.
Does follow for follow work on Instagram?
It adds numbers, not an audience. Follow for follow, or F4F, is a swap: you follow someone and they follow you back. Meta's spam policy bans exchanging for engagement and names follows explicitly. These followers joined for the deal, not your content, so they rarely watch your Reels. Check the table below: if followers rise while reach to non-followers and sends stay flat, you're padding the count.
Are free follower apps safe?
No. According to Instagram's Help Center, apps outside Instagram that offer likes or followers in exchange for your login details aren't affiliated with Instagram. Handing them your username and password, or an access token, can give them full access to your account, and using them can get it disabled. If you already shared your password, change it today and turn on two-factor authentication.
The free route that works is the one in the plan: ten minutes a day leaving useful comments in your niche, one trial Reel a week and Collab posts with accounts like yours.
How to grow followers on Instagram organically and measure it
Track net followers, reach to non-followers and profile visits that turn into follows. Your total count alone will lie to you.
| Metric | Healthy sign | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Net followers (gained minus lost) | Up every week | Spikes no post explains |
| Reach to non-followers | Growing | Almost all reach is followers |
| Follows per profile visit | Steady or rising | Lots of visits, few follows |
| Sends and likes per reach | Above your average | Below it for weeks |
Made-up example with realistic numbers: a ceramics shop in Portland posts a Reel that reaches 4,000 accounts, 2,900 of them non-followers, and gets 160 profile visits and 24 follows. That's a 15% follow rate. If the next Reel brings more visits but converts at 5%, the profile is the problem, not the Reel. For engagement, use our engagement rate calculator.
Act as an Instagram strategist. Here are the stats for my last 8 Reels: reach, reach to non-followers, sends, likes, profile visits and follows [paste your data]. Calculate sends per reach, likes per reach and the share of profile visits that turned into follows for each one. Tell me what the top three have in common and suggest three new Reels that follow that pattern.

Frequently asked questions about getting more Instagram followers
What is an Instagram pod?
An Instagram pod is a group of accounts that agree to like and comment on each other's posts, usually coordinated in a group chat. It inflates engagement from the same few people, so it doesn't bring you new viewers. Worse, Meta's spam policy bans exchanging engagement, which is exactly what a pod does. If you want a support network, collaborate on Collab posts instead: they're official and reach both audiences.
How do you get more followers on Instagram without posting?
Slowly, because without posts Instagram has nothing to recommend. You can leave thoughtful comments on accounts in your niche, join other people's Collab posts as a collaborator, which puts the post on your profile and in front of their followers, and set up your name and bio for search. That gets you started. To actually grow you need Reels, the format Instagram shows to people who don't follow you yet.
Why am I losing followers on Instagram?
Usually for one of three reasons. Instagram removes inauthentic follows, so bot followers disappear on their own. People who followed you for a giveaway or a follow-back leave once there's nothing in it for them. And if you switch topics, part of your audience stops getting what it came for. Check your professional dashboard weekly for follows and unfollows: your net number is what matters.
What is the 5-3-1 rule on Instagram?
It's an engagement routine, not an Instagram rule. Each day, or for each account you want to get on the radar of, you like five posts, leave three thoughtful comments and follow one relevant account. Instagram has never published it; we only found it on marketing blogs. It can help a new account get noticed in its niche, as long as the comments are genuine and you never automate it.
How do I get 1,000 followers on Instagram?
Work backward, because nobody can honestly promise you a timeline. Check how many profile visits each Reel brings and what share of those visits turn into follows. At 100 visits per Reel and a 10% follow rate, that's 10 followers per Reel, so you'd need about 100 Reels like that, or a better number on either side. Collabs raise visits; your name, bio and pinned posts raise the follow rate.
How do I get my first 100 followers on Instagram?
Start with people who already know you, because the first 100 rarely come from the algorithm. Finish your profile first, then add your handle or profile QR code to your email signature, website, receipts and counter, and ask customers to follow. Here's a made-up example: a café with 60 customers a day, where 1 in 10 follows, adds about 6 followers a day, so 100 in under three weeks. After that, keep posting Reels so strangers can find you.
How many followers do you need to get paid on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't pay you for followers; it pays through tools like Gifts on Reels. According to its Help Center, checked in 2026, Gifts require a professional account, being 18 or older, at least 500 followers and living in an eligible country, which includes the US, among other requirements. Each star you receive is worth $0.01. For brand deals, expect to show your insights, not just your follower count.
