Your images never leave your device: they’re converted right here, in your browser. No uploads, no sign-up.
How it works: your browser opens each image, redraws it on a canvas at the width you pick and saves it in the new format. Nothing goes to any server. Animated WebP files keep only their first frame. When you download them all, your browser may ask permission to save multiple files.
You don’t need Photoshop or a random upload site to go from JPG to PNG. This tool works in your browser, handles several images at once and leaves the dimensions alone. Plus it has an extra almost no converter offers: removing the white background from a logo so the PNG comes out transparent.
How to convert JPG to PNG
-
Drop your JPG files
One or a whole batch, .jpeg files included: same format, different extension.
-
Decide whether to remove the white background
If it’s a logo, an icon or a drawing on plain white, check Remove the white background. If it’s a photo, leave it unchecked.
-
Download your PNG files
One by one or all in a row. Each row shows the old and new file size.
Convert image to PNG: which source formats work
“Convert image to PNG” sounds like one job, but the source format decides whether it works here. The tool above takes this:
- JPG and JPEG: no problem. It’s what the tool is built for.
- WebP: yes too, though the WebP to PNG converter is tuned for keeping transparency.
- AVIF: only if your browser can open it; if not, try Chrome or Firefox.
- HEIC from an iPhone: not on the list. To avoid it at the source, Apple says that choosing Most Compatible under Settings, Camera, Formats saves new photos as JPEG. For the HEIC files you already have, a Mac can convert them with the Convert Image quick action in Finder.
- GIF, SVG, BMP or TIFF: not on the list either, so you’ll need another program.
A regular phone photo is already a JPG and works as is. Turning it into a PNG won’t improve it. The file just gets heavier, as the test below shows.
JPG to PNG transparent: when it works
What most people want from JPG to PNG transparent is a logo without that white box. Here’s how this tool handles it: it starts at the edges of the image and turns all the near-pure white connected to them transparent. White inside the design (the hole in an “o”, for example) stays put if it doesn’t touch the outside, and soft edges become semi-transparent so you don’t get jagged outlines.
We tested it in October 2026 with our own logo saved as a JPG on white, 1,551 × 480 px: 69% of the pixels became transparent and the letters stayed intact. It works great for logos, icons, scanned signatures and flat drawings. For photos of people or products on backgrounds with shadows, use an AI background remover.
Why the PNG is so much bigger
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, including the noise left by JPG compression. In our test:
| Image | JPG | PNG |
|---|---|---|
| Photo, 2,000 × 1,116 px | 262 KB | 2.6 MB |
| Photo, 1,500 × 1,000 px | 197 KB | 2.1 MB |
Ten times heavier for the same image. So for photos headed to your website, PNG is almost never the answer: if it needs to be light, stay with JPG or switch to WebP. And if your site doesn’t exist yet, see how to build a website with AI.
Difference between JPG and JPEG, and JPEG to PNG
There isn’t one. JPG and JPEG are the same format, short for Joint Photographic Experts Group. The shorter name exists because older versions of Windows and MS-DOS limited extensions to three characters, according to Adobe, and that limit is long gone. So converting JPEG to PNG works exactly like converting JPG to PNG: drop the file in and go. You may also meet .jfif or .jpe, which belong to the same family.
What does fool people is the extension. A file called logo.jpg can be a PNG or a WebP that someone renamed. To find out, open it in a plain text editor and look at the very start: a PNG shows the letters PNG right away, because its first eight bytes are 89 50 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A, as the W3C specification defines. A JPEG shows no such letters. It starts with the bytes FF D8 FF.
When a JPG to PNG converter is worth it
This is a free JPG to PNG converter with no sign-up, and here’s when it pays off:
- Logos and icons you’ll place on colored backgrounds, with the white background removed.
- Platforms that insist on PNG: some forms, templates and design tools.
- Images you’ll edit several times: PNG doesn’t add loss with every save.
- Screenshots with text someone sent you as JPG that you need to touch up.
Frequently asked questions about converting JPG to PNG
How do I convert a JPG to a transparent PNG?
Converting alone doesn’t create transparency: a JPG has none, so the PNG would keep the same background. For logos and drawings on plain white, check Remove the white background: the tool makes the white that touches the edges transparent and keeps the white inside the design. For photos with complex backgrounds, you’ll need an AI background remover.
How can I convert a JPG image to PNG without changing its size?
Just leave the max width empty. The PNG comes out with the exact same pixel dimensions as the JPG, and each row shows the dimensions so you can check. If you do type a width, the image shrinks without stretching and the height adjusts on its own.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image without losing anything else, but it can’t bring back what the JPG already lost when it was compressed. That’s why the file gets much bigger and looks the same. Where PNG does help is afterward: if you’ll edit the image several times, you won’t add more loss with every save.
How can I convert a JPEG to JPG?
You don’t need to: JPEG and JPG are the exact same format, only the file extension is different. Renaming .jpeg to .jpg is perfectly safe. That’s not true for other formats: renaming a JPG to .png doesn’t convert it, which is why you need a tool like this one.
What is JPG?
JPG, or JPEG, is the most widely used image format in the world, built for photos. It’s lossy: it drops details the eye barely notices so the file stays small. It doesn’t support transparency, and every time you save it again, it loses a little more. JPG and JPEG are the same thing with a different extension.
