How to build a website with AI for free, step by step

We checked a dozen builders on their official pricing pages, ran our own prompt through ChatGPT and Gemini to see what they make up, and listed what to fix before you hit publish.

Here's how to build a website with AI for free: describe your business, let the builder generate the copy, images and layout in minutes, and publish on its subdomain without paying a cent. What almost no free plan gives you is your own domain, and that changes the answer if you run a real business.

In October 2026 we checked the official pricing pages of a dozen builders, asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and ran our own prompt through two AI models. They made things up, even though we told them not to.

Below you get an honest comparison to build a website with AI for free, a step-by-step process with a tested prompt and the checklist to run before launch. It's the starting point of our web design and AI hub.

What it means to create a website with AI (and what it won't do)

It means asking a tool to build your site from a description: structure, copy, images and design, ready for you to edit.

To create a website with AI is to use an AI website builder, or a chatbot like ChatGPT, to generate the first version of your site from a description of your business. The tool proposes pages, copy, images, colors and forms; you review, fix, connect your domain and publish.

What it isn't: a finished website. The AI doesn't know your prices or why customers pick you; a SWOT analysis does. It writes the draft; you bring the business.

Best free AI website builder: what each free plan really includes

Most let you try for free, but none of these seven lets you connect your own domain without paying.

What is the best free AI website?

The best free AI website builder is the one that fits what you sell. For a local business with a contact form and bookings, Wix. For a design-heavy site with animation, Framer. For custom logic like a quote calculator or client portal, Lovable or Bolt.new. Any AI website builder gives you a visual editor; a code generator gives you freedom and bills you in credits.

Website builder with free custom domain: what you really get

Short answer: no builder gives you a domain free for life. The "free domain" on pricing pages is a first-year perk on paid annual plans, and it renews at the regular rate. Here is what each route includes, per their official pages.

RouteWhat's freeThe catch
Wix annual plansOne year of domain registrationOnly on your first Premium purchase, not on renewals or upgrades
Squarespace annual plansOne year of domain registration, plus a 14-day trial with no cardYear two is billed at the standard rate
HubSpot's free builderHosting, SSL and a custom domain connectionYou buy the domain and live inside HubSpot
AI-written code on Cloudflare PagesFree plan with 500 builds a month and 100 custom domains per projectYou upload the files and set up the contact form yourself

A pro move: register the domain in your own name and with your own email, never in the builder's or your freelancer's. If you switch tools someday, the domain goes with you.

How to make a website with AI, step by step

Gather your real details, pick a builder, generate with a solid prompt, fix what the AI invented, add the legal pages, connect your domain and publish.

  1. Gather your real business details

Services, prices, service area, hours, contact info, your own photos, the three questions customers ask most and how you'll generate leads: calls, bookings or quote requests.

  2. Pick a builder for what you sell

Use the table. Torn between two? Generate the site in both with the same prompt and keep the one that needs fewer fixes.

  3. Generate the first draft with a complete prompt

Copy the prompt below and fill in the brackets. The more specific you are, the less it invents.

  4. Fix everything the AI made up

Search for every [FILL IN] and every claim you never gave it. Rewrite the headline and services in your own voice.

  5. Add your legal pages and test the form

Privacy policy, terms if you sell online and accessible forms. Send a test message and make sure it lands in your inbox.

  6. Connect your domain and check the padlock

Point your domain's DNS to the builder following its help docs, then wait until the site loads over https.

  7. Publish and add your site to Search Console

Verify ownership in Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.

Here's the prompt we tested, filled in with Maple & Rye, a neighborhood bakery in Columbus, Ohio, that we invented for this guide.

Copy-paste prompts

Act as a web designer and copywriter for small businesses. Create the structure and copy for a one-page website for [business name], [what it does] in [city]. Audience: [ideal customer]. Goal: get visitors to [call, book or request a quote]. Sections: hero with headline and button, services with prices, about us, reviews, FAQ and contact with a form. Tone: [friendly or professional]. Write a title tag of 55 characters max and a 140-character meta description. Do not make up prices, reviews, numbers or contact details: wherever you are missing information, write [FILL IN].

AI website generator limits: what it still gets wrong

An AI website generator speeds up the draft, but it stumbles on five things that decide whether you sell: copy, technical SEO, speed, legal and accessibility.

Can AI really build me a website?

So, can AI build a website? It can build the draft, not the business. In our test, the "do not make up" rule cut the invented prices and phone numbers, but not the invented reviews or promises. Publish those as-is and you have a legal problem: the FTC's rule banning fake reviews, announced in August 2024, explicitly covers AI-generated ones.

What breaksWhat happensYour fix
Generic copy"Made with love", "the best ingredients": fits any bakery in AmericaAdd your process, your years, your neighborhood
Made-up claimsReviews, dietary promises, delivery claimsCheck every sentence before it goes live
Technical SEOLong titles, no clear H1, no local SEOOne H1 per page, clean URLs, Google Business Profile
SpeedHeavy animations and imagesCompress images and test in PageSpeed Insights
Legal and accessibilityNo privacy policy, no alt textYour own policy and alt text on every image

Google rates a page as good when the main content loads in 2.5 seconds or less, taps get a response within 200 milliseconds and layout shift stays at 0.1 or less (Core Web Vitals).

Vibe coding a website: what it is and when it's worth it

Vibe coding means telling an AI what you want in plain English, letting it write the code and testing the result instead of reading every line. The term is credited to Andrej Karpathy, and Collins picked it as its 2025 Word of the Year. Lovable and Bolt.new, from our table, work this way.

For a business owner, the real question is whether it beats a builder with a visual editor.

Your situationBetter fit
Five-page service site with a contact formAI website builder
Site you'll tweak weekly with no coding skillsAI website builder
Quote calculator, client portal or a form with its own logicVibe coding
Quick prototype to show a clientVibe coding

Two warnings before you jump in. Every change burns credits: Lovable's free plan gives you 5 a day, up to 30 a month, and Pro costs $25 a month. And security: Veracode's 2025 report found that code from more than 100 AI models had OWASP Top 10 flaws in 45% of its tests. A brochure site carries little risk. If you take logins or payments, pay a developer to review it.

Before you publish: domain, SSL, website privacy policy and ADA checks

Before you hit publish, run six checks: domain, SSL, website privacy policy, accessibility, forms and Search Console. If one fails, wait.

CheckHow you know it's done
Custom domainSite loads on yourdomain.com, with and without www
SSLPadlock and https; most builders turn it on when you connect the domain
Privacy policyLinked in the footer and next to every form
AccessibilityAlt text on images, readable contrast, buttons with real labels
FormsA test message reaches your inbox
Search ConsoleOwnership verified and sitemap submitted

What does ADA compliance mean for a small business website?

The Department of Justice's 2022 guidance says the ADA covers businesses open to the public, including the goods and services they offer online, and points to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as helpful guidance. In practice: alt text, keyboard-friendly menus, readable contrast and forms with clear labels. AI builders rarely do this for you.

Once you're live, you need people to find you. Start with the long-tail keywords your competitors ignore, which is where a brand-new site can actually rank.

How much does a website cost: AI builder vs. hiring a pro

With AI, $0 on a subdomain or about $48 a year with your own domain; a professional build costs more but solves what AI can't.

That $48 is WordPress.com Personal at $4 a month billed yearly, before taxes, the cheapest paid plan with a custom domain we verified; Hostinger charges $119.52 upfront for four years. Add your own hours: they cost money too.

When is it worth hiring a professional?

When the website is your main sales channel and a broken checkout costs you customers the same day. Also when you need to rank in a crowded local market, handle sensitive data (health, kids) or connect the site to your POS, CRM or booking system. And when your brand lives on standing out, because AI templates look a lot alike.

The flip side: if you just need a few pages so people can call you, AI is more than enough. And if you want ChatGPT and Gemini to cite you too, read GEO vs SEO before you write page two.

Frequently asked questions about building a website with AI

Can ChatGPT build a website?

Yes, up to a point. ChatGPT can write the HTML, CSS and JavaScript for a simple site, but it doesn't host it or give you a visual editor: you paste the code into a host, connect your domain and handle updates yourself. For a one-page landing page that works; for a site you'll edit every week, a builder saves hours. Check the output too: in our test, its title tag ran long.

What website builder is 100% free?

None of the big ones is free in every way. Wix, Framer, Lovable, Bolt.new and WordPress.com let you publish for $0, but on their own subdomain and with their branding or ads. The free route that keeps your own domain is HubSpot's drag-and-drop builder, which officially lets you add a custom domain for free, or a static host like Cloudflare Pages for code an AI wrote. Either way, you still pay for the domain itself.

Do I need a privacy policy on my website?

If your site collects any personal information, such as a contact form, newsletter signup or analytics, assume yes. California's Online Privacy Protection Act requires commercial sites that collect personally identifiable information from California residents to post a privacy policy conspicuously, and you can't stop Californians from finding your site. Say what you collect, why, who you share it with and how to reach you, based on the tools you really use.

How do I create a website with AI on Wix?

Sign up for free, choose to create your site with AI and chat with the builder about your business, your goal and the pages you need. Wix generates a full draft with text, images and sections that you then edit in its visual editor. You can publish right away on a free wixsite.com address with a Wix banner. To connect your own domain and drop the banner, you need a paid plan, starting with Light.

Can I build a WordPress website with AI?

Yes, two ways. WordPress.com, the hosted version, has a guided AI site builder and a free plan on a wordpress.com address with ads; its Personal plan, at $4 a month billed yearly or $9 billed monthly before taxes, adds your own domain. Self-hosted WordPress from wordpress.org needs hosting, and then AI plugins help with layouts and copy. The self-hosted route gives you the most control and the most maintenance.

Can Claude build a website?

Yes. Claude can write the code for a simple website and show you a live preview in the chat, which makes it handy for a landing page or a prototype. Like ChatGPT, it doesn't host the site or connect your domain, so you still need a host and someone comfortable pasting code. If you'd rather click than code, use an AI website builder instead.

Can I clone a website with AI?

Technically yes: AI builders can rebuild a layout from a screenshot or a description of a page you like. Legally and practically, copy the structure, not the content. The text, photos, logos and code on someone else's site are protected by copyright, and a page with the same copy gives Google no reason to rank it above the original. Describe the sections you admire in your prompt, then write your own copy and use your own images.
