AI search & GEO
GEO vs SEO (and AEO): What Changes, What Stays the Same and How to Measure It
The table that settles it, how to measure each one with what Google and Bing already give you for free, and a real test: we asked Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same question, and only one page got cited twice.
GEO vs SEO is less of a fight than your LinkedIn feed makes it look. GEO is about getting AI tools to cite you in their answers, and it runs on the same foundation as SEO: ranking in Google. What changes is where you show up, how you get picked and, above all, how you measure it.
That's not us being diplomatic. Google's own guide to its AI search features, updated in July 2026, names GEO and AEO and concludes that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. And people want a straight answer: in the US, “geo vs seo” gets about 2,900 searches a month and “aeo vs seo” another 1,900 (DataForSEO, October 2026).
Here's the side-by-side table, what to keep doing, what to change and how to measure it, plus a test we ran today. Because AI search and GEO is about method, not hacks.

What Is GEO and What Is AEO (and How They Relate to SEO)
GEO aims to get you cited by an AI; AEO, to make your text the answer; SEO, to get you ranked in Google.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting AI tools that write answers to mention your brand and link to your site as a source. That means Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It isn't a new trade: it's SEO with a new storefront.
What it isn't: a discipline that retires SEO, or a bundle of magic files that sneak you into ChatGPT.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Close, but not quite. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is shaping your content to be the direct answer to a question: a featured snippet, People Also Ask or a voice assistant. AEO thinks in one question and one answer; GEO thinks about being chosen as a source and recommended by name. The AEO vs GEO debate is mostly vocabulary: in practice, you work on both at once.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO: The Side-by-Side Table
The difference is the storefront and the scoreboard; the groundwork is the same.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank your page and win the click | Be the direct answer | Get cited or recommended by an AI |
| Where you show up | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Unit of work | Page and keyword | Question and answer | Topic, brand and follow-up questions |
| What wins | Relevance, technical health and links | Clear answer up top, lists and tables | Everything SEO needs plus original data and mentions |
| How it's measured | Rankings, impressions and clicks | Snippets won | AI impressions and citations |
| Official free tool | Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools | The same | Generative AI report (Google) and AI Performance (Bing) |
| What Google calls it | SEO | SEO | SEO |
Look at the last row, the one almost nobody shows you: to Google, all three are SEO. If you searched “SEO vs GEO” or “AEO vs SEO” hoping for a winner, there isn't one. What separates them is the format of the result and how you measure it, not a new service to buy on the side.
AI SEO: What Stays Exactly the Same
Almost everything that already works: Google crawling and indexing you, answering better than anyone and earning real authority.
Google's guide to optimizing for generative AI features spells it out: its AI features run on the same core ranking and quality systems as Search. It even names GEO and AEO and warns that many of the hacks going around don't work. Your to-do list:
- Indexed pages that are eligible to show a snippet.
- Content with first-hand experience: your prices, your cases, your photos.
- Clean technical SEO: crawlable, fast and easy to read on a phone, even if you build a website with AI.
- Authority: links and mentions you earn, not buy.
And what you don't need, per that same guide: llms.txt files, chopping your text into tiny chunks, rewriting it “for robots” or special schema for AI.
Is SEO dead now with AI?
No, it changed storefronts. AI answers are built from Google's index and from pages that already do SEO well. What did die is reporting on rankings alone. The worry is real, though: “is seo dead” is asked about 8,700 times a month in US AI chats (DataForSEO, September 2026, estimate).
GEO Strategy: What Changes and How to Adapt, Step by Step
Three things change: you compete to be the source of an answer, follow-up questions matter more, and so does what others say about you.
AI tools don't search your keyword as typed: they split the question into several searches. In our test, ChatGPT turned our question into its own search, “GEO vs SEO difference and AEO meaning,” and Google AI Mode does this at scale. The page that answers those follow-ups wins, and they're pure long-tail keywords.
AI answers also blend your site with what reviews, forums and the press say about you. Google warns that inauthentic mentions don't help much, so don't buy them.
-
Get your baseline
Open Search Console's generative AI report and note which pages already show up in Google's AI features.
-
List the questions customers actually ask
Pull 10 to 20 from People Also Ask, autocomplete and your inbox. A dental clinic in Austin might have “how much do dental implants cost in Austin?”
-
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
Always ask for sources and log who gets cited. That spreadsheet is your GEO tracking.
-
Answer up top and cover the follow-ups
Answer in the first sentence, add a table for comparisons and date your data. One page per intent, not one per variation.
-
Add proof an AI can't make up
Real prices, case numbers, your own photos, an author and a date.
-
Earn mentions off your site
Reviews on your Google Business Profile, industry directories and local press. None bought.
-
Rerun it every month
Same prompts, same tools, same sheet. The trend matters, not a single screenshot.
Search the web and answer as a customer in [your city]: which [your service] would you recommend for [specific need]? Put it in a table: business, website, why you recommend it and the exact page each fact comes from.
SEO to GEO: Where to Start Based on Your Situation
Moving from SEO to GEO isn't a career change, it's one more layer. Where you start depends on what you've already built, and skipping the foundation is the costliest mistake. People do ask: “SEO to GEO” comes up about 400 times a month in US AI chats (DataForSEO, September 2026, estimate).
| Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New site or pages that aren't indexed | Basic SEO: indexing, one page per intent, clean technical setup | No index, no citation: Google's AI runs on the same index |
| Site with traffic and falling CTR | Search Console's generative AI report, crossed with Performance | Shows which pages appear in the answer without getting the click |
| Local business | Reviews, your Google Business Profile and questions that name your city | AI answers blend your site with what others say about you |
| Online store | Product pages with real prices, sizes and return policies | Original data no other site can copy the same way |
| B2B service | Case studies with numbers and mentions in trade media | B2B buyers lean on trust more than on another services page |
That's our rule of thumb, not a Google rule: don't pull budget from SEO to hand it to GEO. Add 20 minutes a month for tracking and write the pages you already planned, with the answer up top and your own data. Once the monthly check shows AI impressions that don't turn into visits, that's when it's worth spending more there.
AI Search Visibility: How to Measure SEO and GEO
SEO is measured in rankings and clicks; GEO, in impressions inside AI answers and in citations you count yourself.
| What you want to know | Where to look | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Rankings and clicks in Google | Search Console, Performance | Free |
| Whether you show up in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Search Console, generative AI performance report | Free |
| Whether Copilot cites you | Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance (public preview since February 2026) | Free |
| Whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite you | Your prompt list, by hand or via API | Free by hand; $0.006 to $0.03 per prompt via API (DataForSEO, October 2026) |
| Visits from AI chats | GA4, Acquisition | Free |
What does Search Console's generative AI report show?
How many times links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Google rolled it out to every site worldwide on August 31, 2026, per the Search Console help page. It doesn't show the query that triggered it or split out clicks. The power move: cross those pages with the ones losing CTR in your regular report. That's the traffic staying inside the answer.
How do you track AI search visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity?
With a fixed list of prompts you rerun every month. Answers shift, so track a rate, not a screenshot: “we showed up in 4 of 15.” Visits that do come through show up in GA4; in our test, ChatGPT added utm_source=openai to the links it cited.
GEO Agency: When to Hire One and What to Ask
A GEO agency makes sense when your SEO already works and you lack the time or method to track and improve what AI tools say about you. “GEO agency” gets about 590 searches a month in the US (DataForSEO, October 2026), so you won't be short of pitches.
Before you sign, read what Google says. Its July 2026 guide states that optimizing for generative AI is still SEO and tells you to be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use “internal” Google metrics. Its page on hiring an SEO adds that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking.
| Ask | A good answer | A red flag |
|---|---|---|
| What will you track? | My fixed prompt list plus Search Console impressions, every month | A “visibility score” with no formula explained |
| What will you change on my site? | Content, original data, technical fixes and earned mentions | A package of llms.txt files and special markup |
| What do you guarantee? | A method and a reporting schedule | “Guaranteed” citations in ChatGPT |
| What access do you need? | Read access to Search Console and GA4 | Full admin access with no explanation |
Ask for a baseline report with your 10 to 20 prompts before any work starts: without a starting point, you can't tell whether anything improved. And if your site doesn't show up on Google for your core searches yet, start with SEO, which is the foundation for everything else.
GEO vs SEO in Practice: We Asked Google and Three AIs the Same Question
We asked Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same question from the US: we counted 27 sources across the four answers, and only one page showed up twice.
| Where | Sources cited | In Google's top 10 | What we saw |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google's AI Overview (“geo vs seo”) | 8: Semrush, Informa TechTarget, Contentful, a16z and others | 0 | None came from the organic first page |
| Perplexity | 10: HubSpot, Semrush, Adobe, Digiday and others | 0 | The sharpest: a clear three-way table |
| Gemini | 7: Jasper, Reddit, Medium, Searchable and others | 0 | Short and right; shared one page with Perplexity |
| ChatGPT | 2 | 0 | Searched and got it right, citing TechTarget and an AEO blog |
The takeaway: ranking on page one doesn't guarantee a spot in Google's own AI answer, let alone ChatGPT's. Each storefront gets measured on its own.

Frequently asked questions about SEO, GEO and AEO
Is AEO the new SEO?
No. AEO is a slice of SEO, not its replacement. It's the work of making your content the direct answer to a question, in a featured snippet, People Also Ask, a voice assistant or an AI summary. Google files both AEO and GEO under SEO in its July 2026 guide. What's new is the scoreboard: you now track impressions inside AI answers and citations, not just rankings and clicks.
What is the difference between SEO and search engine marketing?
SEO earns unpaid visibility; search engine marketing (SEM) usually means paying for it with ads in Google Ads or Microsoft Advertising, billed per click. Some marketers use SEM as an umbrella for both, which is why the terms get muddled. In practice, SEO and GEO compound over time, while ads stop the day your budget does. An HVAC company might run ads during a heat wave and lean on SEO the rest of the year.
What are the four types of SEO?
The usual split is on-page, off-page, technical and local SEO. On-page covers the content and structure of each page. Off-page is links, mentions and reviews from other sites. Technical is crawling, indexing, speed and mobile. Local is your Google Business Profile and local signals. All four feed GEO, because Google's AI features are built on the same index and quality systems as regular search.
How do I rank in ChatGPT?
There's no ranking to buy, but you can make yourself citable. ChatGPT searches the web when it needs to and links its sources, so don't block OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, in robots.txt; blocking GPTBot only opts you out of training. Then answer in the first sentence, cover the follow-up questions and earn mentions on sites it trusts. Heads up: it doesn't always search. In our Spanish and Portuguese tests, it skipped the search on three of five questions.
What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is another name for GEO: optimizing so large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude mention and cite you. You'll also see LLMO, AIO and AI SEO. Different labels, same job, and Google itself uses GEO and AEO. If an agency pitches LLM SEO as something separate, ask what they'd actually do differently. Usually it's content quality, crawlability and brand mentions, which is SEO with a new dashboard.
What is GEO in marketing?
In 2026 marketing talk, GEO almost always means generative engine optimization: getting cited in AI answers. The catch is that GEO has an older marketing meaning too, geotargeting or geo-marketing, which means serving ads or content by location. Even search results mix them up: one page on Google's first page for “geo vs seo” still defines GEO as location-based ads. Check which one someone means before you sign anything.
