Long Tail Keywords: What They Are and How to Find Ones That Rank (Real Data)

A free-tools method, real numbers from an Austin coffee shop and a simple rule that stops your pages from competing with each other, tested today with DataForSEO and three AI assistants.

Long tail keywords are specific, low-volume searches like "late night coffee shops austin" that bring few visits one by one but add up to a huge share of traffic. They're the fastest way for a small site to rank, because the person searching knows exactly what they want and fewer pages compete for them.

We checked it today, October 2026: 20 Austin coffee shop searches measured with DataForSEO, the Google top 10 for six of them and the same question put to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. None of the three AIs checked whether anyone searches their examples.

Below you get our free long tail keyword research method, how to pick and group keywords without cannibalizing your own pages, and their role in AI answers. It's step one of any SEO strategy for a small business.

What Are Long Tail Keywords? A Definition With Real Numbers

Long tail keywords are the very specific, low-volume searches that together make up the vast majority of distinct queries on Google.

So, what is a long tail keyword? It's a specific search with low monthly volume that describes a concrete need: "gluten free coffee shop austin" instead of "coffee shop". One by one they bring little traffic; together they bring plenty of qualified visitors and face less competition than broad terms. They work for product titles too when you sell on TikTok Shop.

How big is the tail? Almost 93% of the keywords in Ahrefs' U.S. database get fewer than 10 searches a month (Ahrefs, May 2026).

What they're not: a word count. They usually have three or more words, but volume and specificity decide. And a long phrase nobody types is useless: Perplexity suggested "coffee shop near Zilker Park with outdoor seating", while "coffee shops with outdoor seating austin" gets 10 searches a month.

Long tail vs short tail keywords: what's the difference?

Short tail keywords are broad, middle tail keywords narrow them down and long tail keywords describe a precise need. Here's U.S. data from October 2026 (DataForSEO).

What is long tail marketing?

"Long tail marketing" comes from the theory Chris Anderson published in Wired in October 2004: online, selling a little of many niche products can add up to as much as selling a lot of a few hits. SEO borrowed the idea for searches.

How to Find Long Tail Keywords for Free, Step by Step

To find long tail keywords for free you only need four Google sources: autocomplete, People Also Ask, Search Console and the top 10 itself.

  1. Write down your seed keywords

Think like a customer, not like your logo: "coffee shop", "espresso" or "study spot", plus your city or neighborhood.

  2. Squeeze Google autocomplete

Type each seed followed by a space, then each letter: "coffee shop austin a", "coffee shop austin b"... Google's help says predictions come from real searches. Use an incognito window.

  3. Open People Also Ask

Search your seeds and expand two or three questions; more appear as you click. Note the related searches at the bottom of the page too.

  4. Check what Search Console already sends you

In Performance, filter Query with "Custom (regex)" and paste ^(\S+\s){4,}\S+$ to see only searches of five words or more. Sort by impressions and look at positions 8 to 20. Google explains the filter in its Search Console help on advanced filters.

  5. Put a number on each search

Run them through Google Ads Keyword Planner, which is free; if you barely spend on ads, it shows ranges instead of exact numbers. Keep the ones that get searches and match what you sell.

  6. Google each one and see who ranks

Reddit threads, Facebook groups or years-old posts in the top 10 mean there's room. Only big publishers? Park it for later.

  7. Group them and give each group one page

Searches that share 4 or more top 10 results belong on the same page. We show you with real data below.

What is the best free long tail keyword tool?

There's no single best free long tail keyword tool, because Google's own tools cover the job between them.

Long Tail Keyword Generator: How to Use AI Without Made-Up Ideas

A long tail keyword generator is anything that turns one seed into hundreds of phrases: Google autocomplete, a keyword suite or a chatbot. Ideas are the easy part. The catch is that nothing checks whether anyone types them.

We tested that catch. We wrote 15 phrases the way an AI answer sounds, like "quiet coffee shop in austin with outlets" or "coffee shop in austin that serves breakfast tacos", and looked them up in DataForSEO (Google U.S., October 2026). Not one came back with a monthly search volume.

So use AI for the first step only:

  1. Ask for 50 ideas from your seeds, split by customer type, problem and place.
  2. Cut each phrase down to how a person actually types it.
  3. Run the list through Keyword Planner or Search Console and drop anything with no searches.
  4. Google the survivors and read the top 10 before you write a word.

A chatbot tells you what customers might ask. Search data tells you what they do ask.

Long Tail Keyword Examples: An Austin Coffee Shop With Real Data

These long tail keyword examples come from a specialty coffee shop in Austin: the broad search belongs to others, the specific ones are up for grabs.

The coffee shop is made up for this guide (say it's on South Congress), but the numbers are real: Google U.S., DataForSEO, October 2026.

SearchMonthly searchesWhat we'd do with it
coffee shops austin14,800Nothing yet: too broad for a new site

24 hour coffee shop austin590Its own page, only if you're open 24/7

dog friendly coffee shops austin210Patio page with photos
coffee shops to study austin50"Study here" page
coffee shops to work in austin20Section now, its own page later

With three pages and a section you target about 650 searches a month, or 1,250 if you're open 24/7, that the broad term was never going to send you.

How to Pick Them by Search Intent and Keyword Difficulty

Check search intent first, so the query asks for exactly what you sell, then keyword difficulty, so the top 10 is beatable for your site.

IntentWhat the searcher wantsExample (per DataForSEO)Page to give them
InformationalTo learn or comparecoffee shops to study austinPhotos of tables, outlets and hours
CommercialTo choose between optionslate night coffee shops austinHours, menu and reviews
NavigationalTo reach a specific place24 hour coffee shop austinThat business's site or profile

Tools score keyword difficulty from 0 to 100, but local searches often have no score: DataForSEO had one for fewer than half of our Austin searches. So read the top 10. In "dog friendly coffee shops austin", Reddit is first and Yelp, Instagram and TikTok follow; no café has a page that nails it.

Keyword Cannibalization: How to Group Long Tail Keywords

Keyword cannibalization is two of your pages competing for one search, and keyword clustering prevents it by grouping what Google already treats as one.

Our rule: compare the top 10 for two searches. If they share 4 or more results, same page; 0 or 1, separate pages; 2 or 3, let intent decide. Here's what we got from Austin today:

SearchesShared resultsDecision
late night coffee shops austin and coffee shops open late austin4Same page
coffee shops to study austin and coffee shops to work in austin0Separate pages
dog friendly coffee shops austin and pet friendly coffee shops austin0Target "dog friendly"

The surprise: "dog friendly" and "pet friendly" look like twins, yet they share zero results, and only "dog friendly" has measurable volume. Studying and working split the same way: students get UT guides and Reddit, remote workers get Yelp and laptop-friendly directories.

How to Use Long Tail Keywords on a Page: Title, H1 and Body

Once a group has its page, one long tail keyword leads and the rest ride along. Don't repeat the phrase over and over; put it where Google and readers look first. Here is the late night page for our Austin coffee shop.

SpotWhat to doExample
Title tagLead with the main keyword, short enough that Google doesn't cut itLate Night Coffee Shops in Austin: Open Till 2 AM
H1Same idea, written for peopleLate night coffee in Austin, with our hours and what to order
First 100 wordsSay it once, plainlyWe're a coffee shop on South Congress that stays open late.
SubheadsUse the variations and the questions people askCoffee shops open late in Austin: what time do we close?
URL and image altShort and descriptive/late-night-coffee-shops-austin/

The rest is plain writing. Use the variations from your group once or twice, answer the sub-questions you found in People Also Ask and stop there. If a sentence sounds like a robot wrote it, rewrite it.

Long Tail SEO and AI Search: How Query Fan-Out Works

Long tail SEO matters more with AI, because Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews break each question into long tail sub-searches.

Google calls it a "query fan-out" technique in its documentation on AI features in Search, and says there are no additional requirements to appear in them. It's SEO.

What is query fan-out?

Query fan-out is how an AI search engine splits one long question into several smaller searches. Ask for "a quiet coffee shop on South Congress to work from", and the AI may search Wi-Fi, outlets, noise and reviews separately. The page that answers several of those sub-questions has a better shot at being cited.

Long tail keywords are the building blocks of Google AI Mode answers. What changes and what doesn't: GEO vs SEO.

Copy-paste prompts

Act as Google's AI Mode. A customer asks: "[the long question your customers ask]". Write the 10 sub-searches you would run to answer it. Then read my page [paste the text here] and tell me which ones it answers, which it doesn't and what paragraph you'd add to fill each gap.

Once the page is ready, put the long tail keyword at the start of the title and preview it in our SERP simulator.

Frequently asked questions about long tail keywords

What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

The 80/20 rule in SEO is the Pareto principle applied to search: a small share of your pages or keywords usually brings most of your traffic and sales. It's a rule of thumb, not a law, and the split varies from site to site. With long tail keywords it cuts both ways: no single long tail query makes your top 20%, but hundreds of them together can. Check your own split in Search Console before deciding where to invest.

What are some good keywords?

Good keywords pass three tests: they match something you actually sell, they get real searches every month and their top 10 is beatable for your site. A two-word keyword with 50,000 searches can be a worse pick than a six-word one with 200 if national brands own the first page. Start with the keywords closest to a purchase or a visit, then work outward to the informational ones that build trust.

Do long tail keywords work in Google Ads?

Yes, with one catch. Specific keywords match your ads to clearer intent, which helps relevance and wastes less budget on people who were never going to buy. The catch: Google Ads can flag keywords with very little traffic as “low search volume”, and those stay inactive until searches pick up. The fix is to group close variations in one ad group with phrase match, so long tail searches still trigger your ads without dozens of near-empty keywords.

What are keywords in SEO?

Keywords in SEO are the words and phrases people type into Google, or ask an AI assistant, when they look for something. For your site, a keyword is the search you want a specific page to answer. Each one comes with three numbers worth knowing: monthly volume, difficulty and intent. Broad keywords bring volume and fierce competition; long tail keywords bring less traffic per term, but visitors who know exactly what they want.

What is a good keyword difficulty?

For a new or small site, aim for keywords your tool scores under about 30 out of 100, and treat anything above 60 as a long-term goal. Each tool calculates difficulty its own way, mostly from the backlinks of the pages that already rank, so scores don't travel between tools. Today, “long tail keywords” scored 61 in DataForSEO and 75 in Ubersuggest. Use the number to filter your list, never as the final word.

How do I rank in ChatGPT?

There's no paid placement or official trick: ChatGPT search looks things up on the web and cites the pages that answer best. Three basics matter. Let OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, into your site through robots.txt, since OpenAI says it uses it to surface websites in ChatGPT search. Answer the specific sub-questions people ask. And publish facts with a source and a date, which are far easier for any AI to quote.
