Banner Sizes in 2027: Standard Display Ad, Web and Print Dimensions

The sizes that get served most in one table, how heavy each can be according to Google and the IAB, how to resize one design into many, and the print sizes printers actually sell, in feet and inches.

The most common banner sizes for web ads are 300 × 250, 336 × 280, 728 × 90, 300 × 600 and 320 × 100 pixels. An image uploaded to Google Ads can weigh 150 KB at most. Printed vinyl banners are sold in feet instead, with 2 × 4, 3 × 6 and 4 × 8 ft among the sizes printers call most common.

We built this from Google Ads and AdSense Help, the IAB's own specifications and real US search data. Google treats “banner sizes” as a mixed search, part printing and part online ads, so this guide covers both, starting with the digital side.

You'll get the sizes, the file size limits, a way to resize one design into many and the print sizes to ask for. For the full map of paid channels, see our online advertising section.

Standard banner ad sizes: the ones that get served most

The standard banner ad sizes that get served most are the five AdSense calls top performing: 300 × 250, 336 × 280, 728 × 90, 300 × 600 and 320 × 100.

A banner ad is a graphic ad with a fixed pixel size that fills a slot on a website or app. What it isn't: a native ad, which copies the look of the content around it (see our native advertising examples), or the header image on your own site, which nobody buys.

If you searched for web banner sizes to buy ad space, this table covers almost every slot you'll be offered.

What is a 300x250 ad?

It's the medium rectangle: 300 pixels wide by 250 tall. It's the all-rounder, because it fits inside text, in a sidebar and on a phone screen, so almost every site has a slot for it. If you can only make one size, make this one.

What is the skyscraper ad size?

The classic skyscraper is 120 × 600 and the wide skyscraper is 160 × 600, both tall, narrow units for desktop sidebars. The wide version is the one most sites still sell; its bigger sibling, the 300 × 600 half page, gives your message twice the width.

Banner ad sizes in KB have firm limits: 150 KB for images in Google Ads, 600 KB for HTML5 and the IAB's initial load caps.

According to Google Ads Help on uploaded display ads, checked in late October 2026:

  • Images: GIF, JPG or PNG, 150 KB or smaller.
  • Animation: 30 seconds or shorter, and animated GIFs slower than 5 frames per second.
  • HTML5: a ZIP of 600 KB or smaller with 40 files at most, only for accounts that meet Google's requirements (more than 90 days of history and more than $9,000 in total spend).

The IAB goes further in the fixed size specifications of its New Ad Portfolio. It splits the initial load, what downloads when the page opens, from the subload, what comes later, measured after gzip compression and with 10 file requests at most up front.

Google display ad sizes: uploaded banners and responsive ads

Google display ad sizes come in two flavors: a closed list of sizes for uploaded banners and responsive display ads that build the banner from your images.

Which Google Ads image sizes do responsive display ads need?

Three ratios: landscape 1.91:1 (1200 × 628 recommended, 600 × 314 minimum), square 1:1 (300 × 300 minimum) and vertical 9:16 (900 × 1600 recommended). Logos go in 1:1 (128 × 128 minimum) and 4:1 (512 × 128 minimum). Each image can weigh up to 5,120 KB and you can upload up to 15. One catch: for the square image, Google's specs page recommends 600 × 600 and its best practices page, 1200 × 1200. Upload 1200 × 1200 and you satisfy both.

IAB ad sizes: fixed units and aspect ratios

IAB ad sizes come in two families: fixed pixel units and flexible units defined by aspect ratio, which adapt to each screen.

In 2017 the IAB released its New Ad Portfolio, with ratio-based units meant to replace the classic sizes. Here's how they map:

IAB ratioReplacesUse
1:1300 × 250Rectangle
8:1728 × 90Leaderboard
6:1320 × 50Mobile banner
4:1970 × 250Billboard
1:2300 × 600Half page
1:4160 × 600Skyscraper

Here's a detail almost nobody mentions: the IAB's fixed list leaves out both the 300 × 600 and the 336 × 280, while AdSense ranks both among its top five. The site where you'll run decides, not the list.

How to resize a banner for other display ad sizes

To resize a banner for other display ad sizes without distortion, group the sizes by aspect ratio, design one master per group at double size and scale down.

  1. Group the sizes by aspect ratio

Run each size through the aspect ratio calculator. 300 × 250 and 336 × 280 both come out at 6:5, so one design covers both. 728 × 90 and 320 × 50 each need their own layout.

  2. Design at double size

The IAB specs its sizes at double density (2x) for high-resolution screens. Design a 300 × 250 at 600 × 500 and export it at its final size.

  3. Keep the essentials in the center

Logo, offer and button. Very wide units like the 728 × 90 only fit one short line: write it for that size instead of shrinking the rectangle's copy.

  4. Export and get under 150 KB

JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with text and GIF only if it moves. If you're over, run it through an image compressor before uploading.

  5. Check the animation, if any

30 seconds at most and, for GIFs, slower than 5 frames per second, as Google Ads requires.

  6. Upload and check every preview

Every platform shows a preview per size. If the text is readable at 320 × 50, it's readable everywhere.

YouTube banner size: 2560 × 1440 pixels and the safe area

The recommended YouTube banner size is 2560 × 1440 pixels, but only a central strip of 1235 × 338 is the safe area for text and logos.

This banner isn't an ad: it's the header image of your channel and the first thing a visitor sees. Here are the numbers from YouTube Help, checked in October 2026:

WhatSpec
Minimum upload2048 × 1152 px, 16:9
Recommended (especially for TV)2560 × 1440 px
Safe area for text and logos1235 × 338 px at the minimum size
File size6 MB or smaller

By our math, that safe area is 60% of the width and 29% of the height of the minimum image. Anything outside it can be cropped depending on the device, and YouTube advises against shadows, borders and frames.

Say you run a home-cooking channel. The channel name, "New recipe every Tuesday" and your website go inside the safe area, and only the background photo goes outside it. Preview it on a phone, a laptop and a TV before you call it done. And don't confuse it with the video thumbnail, which is a different image with a different size.

LinkedIn banner size: 1584 × 396 pixels for your profile

LinkedIn Help recommends a banner of 1584 × 396 pixels for your personal profile, as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB.

WhatSpec
Recommended size1584 × 396 px
Aspect ratio4:1
FormatJPG or PNG
File sizeUnder 8 MB

That's a very wide, very short strip, so it only fits one short line. Use it to say who you help and how to reach you, not as decoration: one message and one way to contact you. A made-up example: a B2B marketing consultant writes "I help industrial small businesses win customers on LinkedIn" next to her website.

On a profile, the round profile photo overlaps the lower left of the banner. Keep the text in the center or on the right, and check it on desktop and phone before you publish.

Company pages use a different size, and the guides we found disagree on the current one. Upload the image and follow the dimensions the upload screen shows.

Standard banner sizes for print: vinyl and retractable

Standard banner sizes for print aren't an official standard: each printer sets its own list, almost always in feet for vinyl and inches for retractables.

NameBadge's guide lists 2 × 4, 3 × 6, 4 × 8 and 5 × 10 ft as the most common vinyl banner sizes. Vistaprint, one of the biggest US printers, sells 28 vinyl sizes from 1 × 2 ft to 8 × 30 ft, plus custom sizes. Here are the usual banner sizes in feet with their conversions:

FeetInchesCentimetersTypical use
2 × 424 × 4861 × 122Tables, windows, small storefronts
3 × 636 × 7291 × 183Events, sales, grand openings
4 × 848 × 96122 × 244Building fronts, roadside
5 × 1060 × 120152 × 305Stages, wide facades

What is a standard retractable banner size?

Vistaprint sells retractable banners at 24 × 62, 24 × 81, 33 × 81 and 47 × 81 inches. If your printer asks for 100 pixels per inch, a 33 × 81 inch banner is 3,300 × 8,100 pixels. Always get the printer's template: it marks the bleed and the strip hidden inside the base.

Copy-paste prompts

Act as a banner designer. Here's my message: [offer, logo and call to action]. Adapt it to 300 x 250, 728 x 90, 300 x 600 and 320 x 50 pixels. For each size, give me the exact copy (as many words as stay readable), where the logo and button go and what you'd cut compared with the rectangle. Every file must weigh under 150 KB.

Frequently asked questions about banner sizes

How big is a 3x5 banner?

A 3x5 banner is 3 feet by 5 feet, which is 36 by 60 inches or about 91 by 152 centimeters. It's a mid-size vinyl banner: big enough to read from across a parking lot or a sports field, small enough to hang on a fence or a booth backdrop with a few grommets. Before ordering, confirm whether your printer lists the width or the height first, because 3x5 and 5x3 hang very differently.

How big is a 36x72 banner?

A 36x72 banner measures 36 by 72 inches, the same as 3 by 6 feet or about 91 by 183 centimeters. Printers often present it as an all-purpose size for storefronts, events and trade show tables. If you design it in a 1:2 ratio, the same file scales cleanly to 2 by 4 feet or 4 by 8 feet, which share that proportion. Always ask your printer for its template, with bleed and grommet margins marked.

What size should a website banner be?

There's no official website banner size, because the header image on your own site stretches with the screen. Check the size your theme or site builder recommends and upload the image at that size, compressed. Keep your headline and button near the center, since phones crop the sides. A website banner isn't an ad: if you mean ad slots, use the standard ad sizes in the table above, which publishers and ad networks actually sell.

What is the standard banner ad size?

The closest thing to a standard banner ad size is the 300 x 250 medium rectangle. It fits inside articles, in sidebars and on phone screens, so nearly every site and ad network has a slot for it, and Google AdSense lists it among its top performing sizes. If you can only produce one size, make it this one, then add the 728 x 90 leaderboard for desktop and the 320 x 50 or 320 x 100 for mobile.

What size is a leaderboard ad?

A leaderboard ad is 728 pixels wide by 90 pixels tall, an aspect ratio of about 8:1. It runs across the top or bottom of desktop pages, so it only has room for a logo, a short line and a button. It doesn't show on most phones: its mobile counterparts are the 320 x 50 and 320 x 100 banners. A wider version, the 970 x 90, is known as the large leaderboard.

What are the best banner ad sizes?

The best banner ad sizes are the ones with inventory on the sites you want to reach, and Google gives one public reference: AdSense lists 300 x 250, 336 x 280, 728 x 90, 300 x 600 and 320 x 100 as its top performing sizes. Google doesn't publish a click-through ranking by size, so claims that one size wins by a fixed percentage aren't backed by an official source. Start with those five and let your own data decide.
